Net Metering Explained: How Your UPPCL Bill Changes After Solar
What a bi-directional meter does, how import/export units are adjusted, and how to read your first solar bill.
What is net metering?
After solar, DISCOM replaces your meter with a bi-directional (net) meter. It records two numbers: units you import from the grid (night, cloudy days) and units you export (sunny afternoons when you generate more than you use).
Your bill = (Import − Export) × tariff. If you export more than you import, the surplus is carried forward to the next month and settled annually at the DISCOM's rate.
Example
- Generation: 360 units
- Used directly at home during day: 150 units
- Exported: 210 units
- Imported at night: 200 units
Net billed units = 200 − 210 = −10 → carried forward. Bill ≈ fixed charges only.
Things to know in UP
- Net metering is allowed up to the sanctioned load (and up to 10 kW for domestic).
- Net-meter cost and testing fee (~₹3,000–₹6,000) is paid to DISCOM.
- Keep your meter reading photo each month in the UPPower app for records.
